Retail Sales Resume
Targets Success

Focus on employer needs for your retail sales resume by basing it firmly on your unique contributions and sales expertise.

Your Retail Sales Resume should highlight how you are the best candidate for the job in hand. So it is benefits and results oriented from the employer’s perspective. Emphasise your contributions and achievements.

For an example see Retail Resume Samples

Objectives Section

You should highlight your sales capabilities and your contribution to the potential employer in terms of your unique expertise and industry knowledge.

Experience Section

You should highlight your track record of sales accomplishments.

You want to emphasise how you get customers to describe their needs, recommend which goods meet these criteria and persuade customers to purchase those products and more.

Show your value by giving specific sales figures demonstrating how you exceeded your quotas or other sales expectations in terms of dollar amounts or percentage increases. Be careful here not to break confidentially agreements you may have signed in the past. Companies can be very touchy about ex-employees openly revealing their sales strategies or sales figures.

Do emphasise your relevant responsibilities, such as territory, budget, supervisory roles, along with your top achievements.

Remember that all kinds of experience can be valuable to retail employers. For instance in a Home DIY store your ability to answer customer questions may be supported by a lifelong interest you have had in home DIY. You can’t beat the experience of being someone who has been there and done it! Likewise avid readers might do well as sales people in bookstores, and fashion aficionados might do well in clothing stores.

Other areas you might consider worthy of including in your resume could be how you: handled a new sales launches, dealt with difficult customers, assisted in improving sales team performance through a sales-training program, salvaged customer accounts that were previously languishing, etc.

Attitude

Being able to demonstrate a good attitude may be a valuable key to getting your resume noticed. Consider the following attributes: communication skills, customer service approach, persuasiveness, politeness and patience, adaptability, assertiveness and initiative, stress management, level of energy, honesty, personal appearance, team working, business sense, etc.

Education Section

Good to include here not only academic or school honours and awards but also any courses you may have been on in the areas of: customer loyalty programs, customer service methods, sales procedures, product knowledge, accounts and sales administration, basic retail law.
